Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine provides minimally invasive solutions for chronic pain.

As an experienced interventional pain management specialist, Rick Buenaventura, MD, provides the latest treatments such as regenerative medicine. These techniques can help you reduce pain and increase your quality of life without narcotic medications.

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine techniques help manage chronic pain by triggering the healing process within your body to repair the damage causing your pain.

Regenerative medicine can treat several different conditions and symptoms, including:

  • Osteoarthritis and joint degeneration
  • Injuries to the hip, knee, and shoulders
  • Chronic pain, especially in the back, shoulders, or neck
  • Complex pain conditions, like myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia

There are different forms of regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, intradiscal PRP, and prolotherapy.

What is platelet-rich plasma therapy?

PRP therapy harnesses the healing factors in your blood to stimulate tissue regeneration in your pain site.

To perform PRP, Dr. Buenaventura takes a blood sample and concentrates its healing factors by spinning it in a machine called a centrifuge. When this is complete, he injects the PRP directly into your pain site.

At Pain Relief of Dayton, Dr. Buenaventura also performs intradiscal PRP therapy to help stimulate the healing response by injecting platelet-rich plasma into your spinal discs. This use of regenerative medicine can help with spinal issues, such as severe disc herniation, spinal instability, and severe stenosis.

What is prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy triggers the healing process in your body by introducing a natural irritant into your damaged tissue. During this regenerative medicine treatment, Dr. Buenaventura will likely inject between 4-15 shots in the treatment site to help stimulate the repair process.

Dr. Buenaventura usually recommends this therapy for ligament, tendon, or joint injuries, and it’s especially useful for arthritis or degenerative disc disease.

What are the advantages of regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine techniques provide numerous benefits as an interventional pain management tool, including:

  • Little downtime
  • Few side effects
  • Stronger and healthier joints
  • Increased joint stability and mobility
  • Less joint friction
  • Reduced inflammation and pain

When you use regenerative medicine therapies, you can also reduce your need for pain medications. Depending on your particular condition, Dr. Buenaventura might recommend a series of regenerative medicine treatments to help achieve the best results.
